A Step-by-Step Guide on Medicare Enrollment

As you navigate your Medicare options, here is what you need to know about the Medicare enrollment process:

  • Start by determining your eligibility. You are eligible for Medicare when you turn 65 or if you qualify due to a disability. Typically, you will receive an enrollment packet a few months before your 65th birthday. If you are receiving Social Security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in Part A and Part B.
  • You will need to decide whether to stick with Original Medicare or sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan. Part A covers inpatient care, skilled nursing, hospice, and some home health care while Part B covers outpatient services, doctor visits, and preventative care.
  • You need to be aware of your Medicare enrollment period. If you are new to Medicare, you can sign up during your Initial Enrollment Period, which is a 7-month window starting three months before you turn 65 and ending three months after your birthday. If you miss your IEP, you can enroll from January 1 to March 31 of each year.
